2008-2009 Ice Season Wrap-up

Moderate Conditions

During the past ice season less than 700 FDDs were accumulated in Peshnoi area which makes it a moderate winter. First ice was followed by freeze-up in middle of December. By the end of December entire North Caspian was covered with ice. Winter had several thawing and refreezing periods in January and February. The maximum ice volume and ice coverage was reached from mid-January to beginning of February. Break-up started in the beginning of March. The ice has lasted until late March with a total season duration of more than 100 days.
