2011-2012 Ice Season Wrap-up

Very Severe Conditions

During the past ice season more than 1000 FDDs were accumulated in Peshnoi area which makes it a severe winter. The season has started in the beginning of November with temporary first ice and in the second half freeze-up took place. Winter had several thawing and freezing periods in December, January and February. The maximum ice volume and ice coverage was reached through the history of observations. The ice has lasted until mid- April which made this season the longest with duration of more than 150 days.

Maximum ice cover

Max ice volume and ice coverage in the history of observation was reached in February 2012. Almost all North Caspian Sea was in stable ice conditions with some mobile floes along the edge.
